Situated on the south coast between the seaside towns of Bournemouth and Portsmouth, the city of Southampton is a stone's-throw from the New Forest and, with that alongside it's spectacular sea-views, it has much to attract the sightseer.
The city is perhaps best known for it's docks, primarily because many prestigious cruise ships berth there, but Southampton is also a thriving cargo port.
Despite heavy bombing during the War some of Southampton's original ramparts still stand, as well as the old town gatehouse - the Bargate - which represents an iconic image of the city.
Also in town is the Civic Centre, which houses the city library and art gallery among other municipal public services.
Southampton is home to the head office of the definitive UK map-makers, the Ordinance Survey, who are the official national mapping authority.
